PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Part of the debate over closing 37 Philadelphia schools includes the possibility of moving some schools into the cavernous district headquarters building.

“If we’re thinking about closing schools we also have to think about multiple uses for 440,” says superintendent William Hite.

That’s 440 North Broad, the seven-year-old school headquarters building.

Hite says part of the plan to close 37 schools could include moving some schools into the 850,000 square foot central office.

“Part of this is, thinking about how do we use that tremendous space for schools, particularly schools that are currently in buildings that are being leased,” says Hite.

He says any schools moving into 440 couldn’t do so this fall because work would have to be done to the building.

The School Reform Commission votes on the closure plan in March.
